What is IP-Surveillance?
IP is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol, the most common protocol
for communication over computer networks and the Internet. An IP-Surveillance
application creates digitized video streams that are transferred via a
wired or wireless IP network, enabling monitoring and video recording
as far away as the network reaches, as well as enabling integration with
other types of systems such as access control. Digital network cameras
are directly connected to a network infrastructure (TCP/IP network) and
video streams are stored on a hard disk of a PC or server. Special developed
software makes it possible to record images and video streams and offers
ease of use, flexibility and easy lookup of recorded streams. These software
applications also provide integration with existing systems and is the
key differentiator for the high flexibility of IP-Surveillance.
The Harmonix IP Surveillance portfolio is a video management application
that is specially designed to fulfill the need for software offering to
complement the IP-Surveillance solution and offers a platform of intelligent
control and management of security and observation systems. Live video
of cameras connected to the network can be watched, recorded and analyzed
from all over the world. The software has a wide range of features like
intelligent lookup and playback of recorded video. You can also use management
software to efficiently handle video events, generate alarms and record
and export video from the database. Main benefit of an IP-Surveillance
system, besides it’s flexibility and scalability is that it uses
the network which saves installation costs as it is in most cases simply
available. Several IP-network tools that are available (firewalls, Virtual
Private Network; VPN) can be utilized to create a secure surveillance
system with effective use of the network bandwidth.
Recent research of UK based company IMS Research stated that a large
growth of IP-based video systems is expected in the next coming years.
The company expects an average growth of 28,4% for network cameras and
30,3% with video servers the next five years. The major trend is that
the ICT segment and the security market will merge and benefits if they
share expertise to be able to utilize the market demand from users. In
several application areas new technology will replace existing systems
offering a higher security level against lower costs.
An IP-Surveillance systems will consist of the following components:
- A Software driven video management application
- Network infrastructure (LAN, WAN, Internet)
- Storage of video and data on a hard disk on a PC, Server or SAN
- Network Cameras and video servers for connecting analogue cameras
- Interfaces with other intrusion detection solutions such as (alarm
& access control)
Because of its scalability, among all other benefits, the IP-Surveillance
concept is an attractive combination of technologies that provides a wide
range of new features. This combination makes it achievable for usage
in different market segments.
